About This Fundraiser
Most North Korean defectors, fleeing persecution or seeking a better life with more economic, religious, and speech/press freedom, escape through China. In China they risk repatriation and human trafficking. Some estimates say that 80-90% of defectors in China are female, many of them victims of sex trafficking and forced marriages to Chinese farmers.
Along with other Fulbright grantees, I've decided this year to participate in "Running for Resettlement," a race/fundraiser to help bring North Korean defectors to South Korea. All funds will be donated to a rescue fund for the Citizens' Alliance for North Korean Human Rights (NKHR), an organization that brings NK defectors in China safely to South Korea. It costs about $2,500 to bring one refugee from China to South Korea, where they will be given citizenship and government support for resettlement and won't have to spend every day worrying about repatriation or experiencing the horrors of human trafficking.
Our goal this year is to raise enough money to rescue 8 refugees. Please help us reach our goal by donating whatever you think you can. The race will take place on June 12th.
Runners for R4R register to run in the Kim Dae-Jung Peace Marathon in Seoul on June 12, while committing to fundraise for Citizens' Alliance for North Korean Human Rights (NKHR) Rescue Fund. Our goal is to raise $20,000 total to help 8 North Koreans safely reach South Korea from China, where they face human rights abuses.
